Understanding the requirements for a student visa in Australia
Once you’ve made the decision to study with Trade Institute of Victoria (TIV) as an international student, you need to obtain a student visa. This guide will help you understand the key requirements you need to meet in order to gain your student visa.
Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)
You must demonstrate that you’re genuinely seeking temporary entry to Australia for study purposes. This involves providing evidence of your circumstances in your home country, potential circumstances in Australia, value of the course to your future, and your immigration history.
English Language Proficiency
You need to prove you have adequate English language skills. This is done by taking an approved English language test. The most commonly accepted tests are:
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
- TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test)
- PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English)
- Cambridge C1 Advanced Test
For most student visas, you’ll need to a achieve a minimum score equivalent to IELTS 5.5 (Vocational English).
Academic Requirements
You must have been accepted into a course of study and provide an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) from TIV.
Financial Requirements
You need to demonstrate you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees, living costs, and travel expenses. As a guide, you’ll need to show proof of at least AUD $29,710 in savings. The Department of Home Affairs website can assist you with ideas to prove financial capacity. You should also look into the cost of living in the area where you intend to live.
Health Insurance
You must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your stay in Australia or your visa will be denied. The benefits of having this cover include help paying for medical care, prescription medicines, and ambulance services in emergencies. You should also receive an OSHC card for use at doctor appointments.
Character Requirements
You need to be of good character and may need to provide a police clearance certificate or police background check from your home country.
Health Requirements
You might need to undergo a medical examination to prove you meet the health requirements set by the Australian government. Use the My Health Declaration service to complete required health examinations before submitting your visa application.
Visa Application
Once you have all your proof organised, you need to apply for your student visa through the Department of Home Affairs. The application process includes:
- Creating an ImmiAccount
- Completing the online application form
- Paying the visa application fee
- Uploading supporting documents
Processing times can vary, but it’s recommended you apply for your visa at least 6 months before your course start date.
Remember, meeting the above requirements doesn’t guarantee visa approval. Each application is assessed on its individual merits. But by being well-prepared, you’ll increase your chances of a successful outcome.
