Our Domestic Trade Registration course comprises just four or six units depending which stream you select. It is delivered online through TIV’s Virtual Classroom, and is perfectly suited to those who’ve completed their Certificate III trade qualification. This short course covers the required units of competency (outlined in the Building Regulations 2018) to prepare you to apply for Domestic Builder – Limited registration.

TIV is proud to deliver this short course that equips students with units required to gain competency for Domestic Builder – Limited registration. The course outlines how to produce a schedule of resource requirements for materials and labour and how to record (and track) costs.
The Domestic Builder – Limited Essential and Domestic Builder – Limited Landscaping short course is suitable for:
- Certificate III trade graduates who are looking to expand their knowledge but may not want to do a full course such as a CPC40120 – Certificate IV in Building and Construction.

With classes being run on Saturdays, this also makes it easier to study while holding down a job.

The course duration will depend on which stream you select. The DB-L Essentials course is over 10 classes. There may be a gap in between classes. Please contact TIV or enquire for more details. Training taking place either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday nights depending on what you choose.

What you’ll learn
You will complete 4 units:
Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects (CPCCBC4009)
Select, prepare and administer a construction contract (CPCCBC4003)
Produce labour and material schedules for ordering (CPCCBC4005)
Arrange building applications and approvals (CPCCBC4026)
The course duration will depend on which stream you select. The DB-L Landscaping course is over 15 classes. There may be a gap in between classes. Please contact TIV or enquire for more details. Training taking place either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday nights depending on what you choose.
The 4 units are delivered online with TIV’s Virtual Classroom. There is also additional training and support provided via our Student Support Program if this is needed. We do this to ensure no one is left behind.
What you’ll learn

Prepare simple building sketches and drawings (CPCCBC4014)
Select, prepare and administer a construction contract (CPCCBC4003)
Produce labour and material schedules for ordering (CPCCBC4005)
Arrange building applications and approvals (CPCCBC4026)
Read and interpret plans and specifications (CPCCBC4012)
Each student receives a package of material valued at $500 containing:
• The National Construction Code
• The Australian House Building Manual
• The Guide to Standards and Tolerances
• Forms and templates that can be badged and branded to be used for your own future use

That’s why we offer one-on-one Zoom or face-to-face training support. Our trainers have helped hundreds of students from a variety of backgrounds just like you to pass the course. They’ll sit with you and help you with anything you’re struggling with. Whether you need some help with the technology or don’t understand how to use the Building Code, they’ll talk you through it and make sure you learn.
You can also attend Saturday tutorials at our training centre if you feel like you need ongoing face to face support.
And all our classes are live so you can ask any questions you need to while they’re fresh in your mind.

DB-L Landscaping – 15 classes
Theses classes may have a gap in between units. Please enquire and we can provide details on exact class dates.
As it is a rolling start date you can start within three weeks of signing up.
These classes are Virtual Classroom sessions on ZOOM.
Course Fee
This is not a subsidised course. If you are after a government subsidised course you can try our CPC40120 – Certificate IV in Building and Construction.

Due to the accelerated nature of this short course, it’s recommended that students have at least 3 years experience in the building industry in the building and construction industry. This should not include your time as an apprentice.
In addition, you must meet the following prerequisites (with some relating to online component):
- Be 18 years or older
- Have a computer or laptop with Microsoft office (or equivalent). An iPad is not suitable.
- Internet access for the duration of the course
- WhatsApp downloaded for class interaction
- Video access for Zoom calls
- Availability at scheduled class times
- Can read, write and speak English competently
- Have successfully completed a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment

This course isn’t a Nationally recognised course. However all the units are Nationally Recognised.
These units have been put together as they are the most commonly required units needed for when applying for a Domestic Builder-Limited License with the VBA.

Yes, there are support sessions provided every Saturday morning (except for long weekends) at our Williamstown campus. These sessions are open to any current TIV student. Individualised additional training and support is also available through the Student Support Team.

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) registers builders once it has established through its assessment processes that you are a suitable candidate for registration. This involves a searching assessment of your skills and knowledge, coupled with evidence of at least 3 years’ experience involved in running building projects.
The DB-L essentials course covers areas on which you will be assessed by the VBA and prescribed units needed for various DB-L categories.
