This course is for aspiring builders in medium rise residential and commercial construction.

This targeted program is designed for persons who have completed a Certificate IV in Building and Construction course in either Building, Estimating or Site Management and are transitioning up to the Diploma.

This Diploma meets the Victorian Building Authority’s requirements for a prescribed course for registration as Domestic Builder (Unlimited) and Commercial Builder (Unlimited).

It covers the skills and knowledge on which applicants are examined by the Victorian Building Authority for registration for a Residential or Commercial Builder.

Each student receives a package of material valued at $300 containing:
• The National Construction Code
• The Australian House Building Manual
• The Guide to Standards and Tolerances
• Forms and templates that can be badged and branded to be used for your own future use

For students specifically interested in becoming a Registered Builder, TIV provides a specialist workshop to prepare you for undertaking the Victorian Building Authority’s builder registration process.

Delivery & Duration

The course is delivered over 9 months. It is comprised of 36 weeks of timetabled training followed by a 10-week phase during which any needed additional training and support is provided via our Student Support Program. We do this to ensure that no one is left behind.

Students are required to attend timetabled training for one 3-hour evening sessions per week, either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Site-based practical projects are also included in the timetabled delivery phase.

Note: Applicants who have already completed the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) Qualification, may be entitled to credit for up to 6 of the qualification’s 18 units of competence.

Prerequisites
  • You are eighteen (18) years or older
  • Construction industry experience is an advantage, as is experience in settings with transferrable skills such as:
    • Competitive tendering
    • Logistics,
    • Property maintenance
  • You have a laptop with Microsoft office programs (or equivalent) and internet access for the duration of the course
  • You can read, write and speak English competently
  • You have successfully completed a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there Government funding available?

Yes, Government funding is available for eligible students.

To find out if you’re eligible for Government funding  check out the online Funding Eligibility Indicator here or call us on (03) 9399 9511 and we can discuss your options.

Generally, if you have completed a Diploma qualification or higher unfortunately you won’t be able to access Government funding for the course. However, you can still do the course as a full fee-paying student.

What does the student need to supply to be able to participate in the Virtual Classroom?
  • A computer or laptop with Microsoft Office is required (not an iPad)
  • A mobile phone or landline is required for dialling into the audio conference
  • Internet is required
  • Students need to be available during the hours set on the course timetable
  • WhatsApp (ideal)
What is the duration of the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building)?

If you have completed a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) you may be eligible for 6/15 Credit Transfers. This makes the duration of the course 9 months with class once a week.

Can I go straight into the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) without doing a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building)?

You will be assessed on the following questions and criteria to determine if you can go straight into this course:

    • An understanding of building and construction (the real basics)
    • Various site simulations, Super Saturday
    • Practical aspects (practical knowledge), site visits
    • Knowledge of how the National Construction code works
    • Which law is the highest law in Victoria?
    • How a building is constructed from start to finish
    • An understanding of who the stakeholders are
    • Who signs off on the build
Does my Diploma qualify me to becoming a Registered Builder?

No.

However, the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) is a prescribed qualification by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) and will assist you in your application with the VBA. To become a licensed builder, you have to meet the requirements from the VBA and therefore TIV can not guarantee a licensed outcome.

Are there any courses I can do with whilst I’m doing the Diploma of Building and Construction (Building)

Yes!

TIV offers the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Site Management) which is completed on the other alternating Saturday to Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Estimating). These two can be done at the same time. You may also be eligible for credit transfers if you have completed a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building).

What time is class?

Class is 6pm-9pm one day per week and delivered either face to face or through a Virtual Classroom. You are required to attend every class.
