The purpose of the qualification is to meet the needs of estimators and schedulers in the building and construction industry.

In this course you will learn to produce cost estimations and schedules for building and construction projects, use estimating computer software programs and develop your job quoting skills.

Note: Applicants who have already completed the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) Qualification, may be entitled to credit transfers.

Each student receives a package of material valued at $300 containing:
• The National Construction Code
• The Australian House Building Manual
• The Guide to Standards and Tolerances
• Forms and templates that can be badged and branded to be used for your own future use

For students specifically interested in becoming a Registered Builder, TIV provides a specialist workshop to prepare you for undertaking the Victorian Building Authority’s builder registration process.

Delivery & Duration

The course is delivered over 6 months. It is comprised of 30 weeks of timetabled training followed by a 10-week phase during which any needed additional training and support is provided via our Student Support Program. We do this to ensure that no one is left behind.

Students are required to attend timetabled training for two 3-hour evening sessions per week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Site-based practical projects are also included in the timetabled delivery phase.

Note: Applicants who have already completed the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) Qualification, may be entitled to credit for up to 12 of the qualification’s 15 units of competence.

  • You are eighteen (18) years or older
  • Construction industry experience is an advantage, as is experience in settings with transferrable skills such as:
    • Competitive tendering
    • Logistics
    • Property maintenance
  • You have a laptop with Microsoft office programs (or equivalent) and internet access for the duration of the course
  • You can read, write and speak English competently
  • You have successfully completed a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there Government funding available?

Yes, Government funding is available for eligible students.

Generally, if you have completed a Certificate IV or higher-level qualification such as a Diploma or Degree unfortunately you won’t be able to access Government Funding for the course. However, you can still do the course as a full fee-paying student.

Is this course Nationally Recognised?

Yes, on completion you will be issued with the Nationally Recognised qualification:

  • Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Estimating)
If I choose the Virtual Classroom option, are there any face to face classes I need to attend?

Yes, there will be two compulsory Saturday sessions. These will be a Super Saturday and a site visit. These will be located around Melbourne.

Do you have to live in Victoria?

No, students from interstate are welcomed to apply however they will be unable to access government funding. They will have to pay the full fee.

Can I go straight into this Estimating course without doing a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building)?


You will be placed in the mainstream Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) program (6 months, 2 nights a week) and complete the 12/15 units that are the same as the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Estimating). Then during this time, you will do your 3 remaining units on alternating Saturdays over 4 weeks.

What does a student need to participate in the Virtual Classroom?
  • A computer or laptop with Microsoft Office is required (not an iPad)
  • A mobile phone or landline is required for dialling into the audio conference
  • Internet is required
  • Students need to be available during the hours set on the course timetable
  • WhatsApp (ideal)

What if you haven’t completed a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building)?

If you haven’t completed a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) TIV recommends doing the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) first. While doing this you can do the 3 units for the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Estimating). This means at the end of the 6 months you will get two qualifications instead of one.
