This is a course that’s been completed by people of all ages and from all types of backgrounds. It’s even a favourite among first grade AFL players looking to a career beyond football.
This certificate, along with three years of practical experience in the building industry, is a common pathway to becoming a Registered Builder.It is also a pathway to roles such as Construction Supervisor, Site Manager, Site Supervisor and Leading Hand.

The course runs for 6 months with additional training and support provided via our Student Support Program. We do this to ensure no one is left behind.
Students are required to be present for online classes for two 3 hour evening sessions per week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday.
There will also be two compulsory face to face sessions. One is known as Super Saturday where we inspect TIV buildings under construction around Melbourne. The other will also take place on a Saturday and will involve a site visit, inspecting private buildings under construction.

Each student receives a package of material valued at $300 containing:

We know that learning how to build, as well as all the things that go with it like applying for permits, can be overwhelming. That’s why we have great instructors that are experienced but also understand that different people learn in different ways.
We want you to pass. And we want you to feel confident in your capabilities at the end of the Certificate IV.
That’s why we offer one-on-one Zoom or face-to-face training support. Our trainers have helped hundreds of students from a variety of backgrounds just like you to pass the course. They’ll sit with you and help you with anything you’re struggling with. Whether you need some help with the technology or don’t understand how to use the Building Code, they’ll talk you through it and make sure you learn.
You can also attend Saturday tutorials at our training centre if you feel like you need ongoing face to face support.
And all our classes are live so you can ask any questions you need to while they’re fresh in your mind.
The course is delivered over 7 months. It is comprised of 30 weeks of timetabled training followed by a 10-week phase during which any additional training and support is provided via our Student Support Program. We do this to ensure that no one is left behind.
Students are required to attend timetabled training for two 3 hour evening sessions per week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Site-based practical projects are also included in the timetabled delivery phase.

The cut off date to enrol is one week before the course starts.

TIV’s training services are delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth funding to eligible individuals. Only Victoria residents are eligible for the Skills First Government Funding. If you are from interstate you are able to enrol in the course but will have to pay the full fee.

If you’re looking to get your start in the building and construction industry, and possibly even move into an Estimating, Site Management or Project Management role, then this is the course for you.
You don’t need any construction industry experience to enrol in this course. However, previous experience or related skills such as those listed below can be an advantage:

- Be 18 years or older
- Have a computer or laptop with Microsoft office (or equivalent). An iPad is not suitable.

- Availability at scheduled class times
- Can read, write and speak English competently
- Have successfully completed a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment

Yes, there are support sessions provided every Saturday morning (except for long weekends) at our Williamstown campus. These sessions are open to any current TIV student. Individualised additional training and support is also available through the Student Support Team.

The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) registers builders once it has established through its assessment processes that you are a suitable candidate for registration. This involves a searching assessment of your skills and knowledge, coupled with evidence of at least 3 years’ experience involved in running building projects.
The (CPC40120) Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) course covers areas on which you will be assessed by the VBA. Accordingly, it is a valuable achievement on your pathway to becoming a registered builder.
